In today’s post, I’m going to cover a common situation for many new bloggers: Changing the default GoDaddy Nameservers.
If you find yourself utilizing the services of multiple domain registrars, you are not alone.
GoDaddy is the largest domain registrar. However, GoDaddy has a smaller hold on the hosting industry.
Bloggers often have a domain registered through GoDaddy and select a company, such as Bluehost, to handle their web hosting.
I found myself in the same shoes. After testing the waters with a couple of hosting companies over the years, I switched to Bluehost hosting and have never looked back. #NoRegrets
If you are wondering how to connect your domain registrar and hosting accounts, I’m going to answer that question for you today.
First, let’s cover a few details to help you understand the change that you will be making.
When you register a domain, you are purchasing a domain through a domain registrar. This is the company that you pay the annual registration fee (and private registration fees, if applicable).
In order for your blog to appear on the internet, it has to be hosted. A hosting company provides the technology and services of storing your website information and files. These files include the content from your blog, your design theme, the images and videos that you load to your blog, etc.
For your hosting company to have access to a domain registered with a different company, you must update something called your Nameservers.
What is a Nameserver?
In the simplest terms, a nameserver is a specialized server that handles requests regarding your domain name’s services location. The domain name services are managed by a Domain Name System (DNS). Basically, nameservers identify your domain’s DNS provider.
In our example (a GoDaddy registered domain and a Bluehost Hosting account), the GoDaddy domain is automatically set to the default GoDaddy nameservers when you purchase the domain. When you elect Bluehost as your hosting company, you will simply need to update the default GoDaddy nameservers setting to the custom Bluehost nameservers setting.
Then, all future DNS requests will be pointed to Bluehost.
How do I update my Nameservers?
This is very easy to do. I’ve included the steps on how to update your GoDaddy settings in 10 easy steps below.
1. Login to both your Bluehost AND GoDaddy Accounts
2. Once logged into your Bluehost account, click the “Domains” link in the main navigation.
3. Then, click the “Assign” link in the sub-navigation.
4. Then, select the 2nd radio button and enter the name of your domain in the domain field.
Once you have entered the domain name, you will receive a message like this in the Step 2.
5. Once logged into your GoDaddy account, navigate to your My Products page.
If you do not land on the “My Products” page immediately after logging in, you can find this page by clicking the drop-down arrow where you find your account info.
6. From the My Products page, locate the domain that you would like to update and Click the DNS button to the right of the domain.
7. On the DNS Management page, scroll to the Nameservers section and click the “Change” button.
8. Select “Custom” from the drop-down menu
The “default” nameservers are the GoDadddy nameservers. In order to point these to Bluehost, you will need to select “Custom”.
9. Copy/Paste the Nameserver information from your Bluehost account and click SAVE!

10. Go to your Bluehost account and complete Steps 3 & 4 on the Assign Domain page and click the “Assign This Domain” button.
You have officially changed your GoDaddy nameservers to Bluehost nameservers!
