Are you trying to figure out the easiest way to set up a Google Search Console account for your WordPress blog?
In this post, I’ll walk you through the easy set up process for Google Search Console.
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console, formerly know as Google Webmaster Tools, provides insight into the performance of your blog. This is not to be confused with Google Analytics, which provides traffic data. Google Search Console provides you with crawl errors, allows you to encourage crawling through XML sitemap submissions and provides insight into several troubleshooting tools.
Installing the Google Search Console verification code on your WordPress blog, before you need it, can be extremely helpful.
Why? As soon as you install the tracking code on your blog, Google will begin collecting data about your blog’s performance. This data will be extremely helpful in troubleshooting any issues in the future.
In this post, I will walk you through the process of setting up Google Search Console AND Bing Webmaster Tools verification (tracking) codes.
The purpose of the tracking codes is for Google and Bing to verify that you are the owner of your blog and that you should be authorized to view the data that they will be providing.
How do I install the Google Search Console Tracking Code?
I’ve included the steps below for installing the Google Search Console tracking code AND the Bing Webmaster Tools tracking code.
Why do I need to install Bing Webmaster Tools tracking code too?
As of this writing, Bing and Yahoo! still control approximately 11% of the search engine traffic. In the off chance that you come across a situation unique to their search algorithms, it is helpful to have this code already tracking your website data (and it only takes a couple minutes to add).
1. Log into your WordPress Account and your Google Analytics account.
If you have not already set up a Google Analytics account, you will need to set up your Google account now. You can find these steps in my How to Set Up Google Analytics in WordPress blog post.
2. In WordPress, you will need to install the Yoast SEO plugin (if you haven’t already installed it).
The Yoast SEO plugin is currently the most popular SEO plugin and also allows you to implement other Search Engine Optimization strategies. You can install this plugin by going to the “Add New” sub-navigation of “Plugins” in WordPress.
If this plugin is already installed, you will see “SEO” appear in your lefthand navigation.
3. Navigate to the General link within the Yoast SEO plugin.
4. Click the Webmaster Tools tab within the General page of the Yoast SEO plugin.
5. Click the Google Search Console link
This link will take you to Webmaster Central (which connects to Google Search Console, previously known as Google Webmaster Tools).
6. In “Webmaster Central” (Google Search Console), click the “Add a Property” button
7. Enter the website URL and click the “Continue” button.
8. Navigate to the “Recommended Method” tab
*If you screen looks different, simply look for the “HTML Tag” option to find the tracking code described below.
9. Copy the code that appears in Step 1 and paste it into a program that allows you to edit (Notepad, Word, etc.)
10. In the editor (Notepad, Word, etc.), remove everything except what appears within the quotation marks.
In the example shown below, you will delete everything except the text that appears between the quotation marks.
Example: <meta name=”google-site-verification” content=”XO12XO34XO56XO78XO91XO23XO45XO67XO89” />
11. Copy the remaining text and paste it into the Google Verification Code field in WordPress
In this step, you are pasting the portion that appeared between the quotation marks (in step #10).
12. Click the “Bing Webmaster Tools link in the Yoast SEO plugin.
If you are already logged into a Bing account, you can skip to step #14.
13. Create a Bing account or log into your existing Bing account.
14. Enter the URL and click the “Add” button in Bing Webmaster Tools.
15. Click “Add” again.
16. Copy the code that appears in Option 2 and paste it into a program that allows you to edit (Notepad, Word, etc.)
17. In the editor (Notepad, Word, etc.), remove everything except what appears within the quotation marks.
In the example shown below, you will delete everything except the text that appears between the quotation marks.
Example: <meta name=”msvalidata.01” content=”XO12XO34XO56XO78XO91XO23XO45XO67XO89” />
18. Copy the remaining text and paste it into the Bing Verification Code field in WordPress
In this step, you are pasting the portion that appeared between the quotation marks (in step #17).
19. Click the “Save Changes” in Yoast SEO WordPress plugin.
*Do not use the codes that appear in the images. You must use the verification codes that appear in your Google and Bing accounts.
20. *Click the “Google Search Console” link again to return to the verification page & click “Verify”
IMPORTANT:
*Your blog must be live and visible to the world for these two codes to be verified. If you still have a “WordPress Site Coming Soon” page, you will have to wait until your blog is live to verify this code.
21. *Click the “Bing Webmaster Tools” link again to return to the verification page & click “Verify”

*Your blog must be live and visible to the world for these two codes to be verified. If you still have a “WordPress Site Coming Soon” page, you will have to wait until your blog is live to verify this code.
